Join Disaster Risk Reduction Day & Mapathon at CEU!

October 7, 2019

On 14 of October, Syslab of the CEU’s Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy will organize the Disaster Risk Reduction Day to increase risk-awareness and present how Geographic Information Systems and International Policies can help manage disasters.

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is held every 13 October to raise awareness about natural disasters management. The International Day for DRR was started in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. This year will focus on Target (d) of the Sendai Framework: “Substantially reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services, among them health and education facilities, including through developing their resilience by 2030”.

To mark this day, Syslab will be organizing discussions, presentations, and a Missing Maps mapathonMissing Maps is a project which is focusing on supporting the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). HOT uses the power of collective mapping – the “crowdsourcing” of geographic information – to help map large areas quickly and at ever-increasingly detail scales.

Mapathons are globally coordinated mapping events open to the public to make online map improvements or work on missing maps to help map the world's most vulnerable communities affected by natural disasters, epidemics, and other crises. The data is created by people like you and free to use under an open license. Most importantly, no specific knowledge is needed to contribute to OpenStreetMap.

Come and join us on the 14th of Oct!
