ISEPEI and UNDP Joint "Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction" workshop opening

June 25, 2018

June 25, 2018, marked the beginning of this year’s two-week workshop series within the ISEPEI project’s framework. This week decision-makers and experts working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction for the fourth time gathered at Central European University (CEU) for the joint ISEPEI and UNDP "Innovations in Disaster Risk Management" workshop. The workshop traditionally is focusing on recent advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and how they can empower both decision-makers and citizens to play a proactive role in managing disaster risks and providing more effective disaster response.

The workshop opened on June 25 with the welcoming words from course directors - Armen Grigoryan, Cluster Leader and Programme Advisor, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change at UNDP, Regional Centre for Europe and CIS, Turkey, and Viktor Lagutov, Central European University, Hungary.

Combining regional UNDP experience, ICT industry expertise, and accumulated first-hand knowledge by this global community of practice, both theoretical and practical skills will be offered in the field of disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The workshop will continue until June 29, with a number of speakers representing several United Nations offices and programmes including UNDP, UNESCO, UNOOSA, as well as a number of well-known organizations (Google, Airbus, DigitalGlobe, ESRI), among others. Participants will be representing government agencies, international and regional environmental organizations, universities and civil society groups focused on disaster management and risk reduction.
