On Friday, November 8, a presentation “Geoinformation Technologies for Environmental Applications: Real-World Case Studies and Practical Insights” was held as part of OSUN's GeoHub project. The session was led by Sona Guliyeva, a PhD researcher from Politecnico di Torino, who shared her expertise on how geospatial technologies can be applied to solve environmental challenges.
During the presentation, a comprehensive overview of various applications of geoinformation technologies was provided. Their role was emphasized in such areas as wildlife protection, habitat restoration, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and monitoring water quality.
With a background in Environmental Engineering and Aerospace Monitoring, Ms. Guliyeva presented various cases of GIS usage, including the studies of the delta Kura’s dynamics and impacts on the Caspian Sea, water eutrophication, and identification of oil spills. She also talked about the topic of her PhD research “New geodata for innovative urban environmental management”.
As the lecture concluded, attendees left with a deeper understanding of the transformative power of geoinformation technologies in promoting sustainable practices and protecting the environment.
